The Maryland Art Therapy Association invites children and thier famiies to create art in response to their feelings. "My Feelings Are a Work of Art" will feature a background display of several posters depicting recognized artworks throughout history which employ colors, brushstrokes and images to evoke emotions in the child viewer. In addition graphic posters illustrating feelings with words and faces will guide children through the art-making.

get involved with an exciting new Community Arts Journal!!

I am currently working on starting up a journal called Focusing on Community. The purpose of this journal is to draw attention to the importance of bringing art into the public realm. The journal will be broken up into three sections: Art Educators, Community Project Coordinators, and Public Artists. I am currently seeking submissions for the first issue of the journal, which will appear online, and if possible in hard copy in select locations on campus this fall semester. There are many ways in which you can contribute. Submissions may include an article on your beliefs of the benefits of community , a summary of a lesson or community project you have been involved with ( this could be discussing the project itself and the positive benefits that resulted), or even simply an image of a group art project or lesson with a paragraph explaining what it was. I will also be receiving submissions from MAT students and other MICA community members who bring art in to the public. My hope is that by creating this journal and having it readily available to the local community; we can promote the importance of art and influence artists who read it consider the possiblity of sharing their skills and talents with their local community.

If you are interested in making a sumbission please email me with a summary of what it is you would like to write about. If you are unsure or want to know more, you can send me an email with any questions and/or comments. I hope everyone is having a great summer and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best Regards,

MICA’S COMMUNITY ART CORPS HOSTS EXHIBITION,
JUNE 3–14,
ART OPENING AND FESTIVAL, JUNE 5 Noon-3pm
Movin’ Outside In
A Culmination of Yearlong Projects Working With Youth in the Baltimore Community

BALTIMORE— The Community Art Corps (CAC) at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) celebrates the conclusion of its 2009/2010 year with Movin’ Outside In, an exhibition of work made by community members and youth under the direction of CAC artists-in-residence at various sites across Baltimore City, on view Thursday, June 3–Monday, June 14 at Bunting Center’s Pinkard Gallery, 1401 W. Mount Royal Ave.

CAC member artists spend yearlong residencies with nonprofit organizations in Baltimore, where they work with youth and adults to build community through art-making. Movin’ Outside In highlights the different roles community artists play as facilitators, problem solvers and liaisons between Baltimore’s communities and MICA. Featured artists have spent their residencies of 2009/2010 with 901 Arts, Jubilee Arts Center, Refugee Youth Project, the Men’s Center, New Lens Productions, Baltimore Clayworks, Goodnow Community Center and The Club at Collington Square.

On Saturday, June 5 from noon–3 p.m., a free community festival and reception will take place in Cohen Plaza (in front of the Brown and Fox buildings, 1303 W. Mount Royal Ave.) featuring performances by the 901 Arts’ drumline, participatory dances that will be fun for the whole family, and a hip hop performance by a local MC trio.
